Grace University Counseling Center Opens

RibbonCuttingThere is no better way to celebrate homecoming than by officially opening the doors of a new counseling center to continue Grace University’s service in the Omaha community. The new Grace University Counseling Center and College of Graduate Studies are located in the former St. Joseph’s Hospital building at 825 Dorcas St., Omaha. A ribbon-cutting was held on Oct. 18 to celebrate the new facility.

“The Counseling Center and College of Graduate Studies is going to be a hub of healing and education in the community,” said Dr. David Barnes, president of Grace University. “This ribbon-cutting marks the start of great opportunities for our students and the community.”

The South Campus has been through many transitions. In 2003, Hobby Lobby purchased what was then St. Joseph’s Hospital for the purpose of donating the facility to Grace University. Over the past 10 years, the former hospital has been used to expand classroom space for the EXCEL adult degree completion program, facilitate conferences, and host musical performances. Over the years, Grace University has rented part of the facility to churches, youth mentoring groups, counseling groups, and other community organizations.  In 2012, a partnership was arranged with Michael B. Yanney and America First Companies to redevelop the property to serve Grace University and provide space for Veteran’s Administration housing, the Salvation Army Respite Center, Telecare, and Youth Links.

Dr. David Barnes, president, Dr. Linda Vermooten, counseling department chair, Dr. Karl Pagenkemper, biblical studies department chair, and Melissa Glenn, membership services manager of the Omaha Chamber of Commerce participated in the ribbon-cutting.

The Grace University Counseling Center provides free and low-cost counseling to the community. As part of their student practicum, graduate-level counseling students work under the direct supervision of licensed faculty to serve clients and provide excellent counseling services at no cost to the community. Grace University faculty who are licensed counselors and licensed private counselors also serve clients through a tiered fee structure at the Grace University Counseling Center.

The Grace University College of Graduate Studies offers a Master of Arts in Teaching, a Master of Science in Education, and a School Counseling concentration within the Master of Arts in Counseling. The Master of Arts in Christian Ministry has concentrations in Theological Studies, Biblical Studies, Ministry Leadership, Rural Church Ministry, and Counseling Ministry as well.

Grace University, located in Omaha, Neb., is a regionally accredited, private Christian university with more than 40 diverse undergraduate, graduate and adult degree completion programs including education, business, psychology, music, nursing and Christian ministries. The university’s mission is to develop servant leaders for the home, the church and the world through excellence in biblically integrated education.
